"I lost everything within minutes, and it all started with a text message."
I always considered myself cautious with my online accounts. Two-factor authentication, strong passwords, and hardware wallets. I thought I was protected. But a single moment of carelessness was enough for everything to come crashing down.
It started with a seemingly ordinary text message from my mobile provider. It said there had been unusual activity on my account and I should click a link to secure it. I clicked, followed the instructions, and thought nothing of it.
Two hours later, I had no reception. I couldn't make calls or receive texts, and then I received an email: someone was trying to reset my crypto exchange account. Panic set in. I tried to log in, but it was too late. My SIM card was compromised.
The hacker had convinced my phone provider to transfer my number to a new SIM card. After checking my phone, they reset my exchange credentials using SMS-based two-factor authentication.
