Cope with Grief Through Art Therapy

Posted by: Erin Ward in Grief and Guidance | July 9, 2021

When coping with the loss of a loved one, many people turn to art as a meaningful outlet to express their feelings. Plus, it’s also a way to create something special to remember a loved one.

Art therapy can take on many creative mediums, such as sculpture, drawing, painting, and ceramics. Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, art therapy is still a meaningful way to cope with the grief of losing a loved one.

Here are a few more reasons why you should consider giving art therapy a try!

It’s a Safe Outlet for Coping with Grief

Art is a safe outlet for coping with grief and expressing your emotions. Oftentimes, people may be at a loss for words or have their feelings built up inside, so art allows you to release these emotions and express yourself. It also can help you better understand your emotions.

It Can Help People Address Past Traumas

If someone experienced the tragic death of a loved one, it can help them address this trauma and heal from it. Tragic deaths can include death by suicide, an illness, an accident, the death of a child, or another traumatic circumstance.

It Gives You an Escape

While it isn’t healthy to ignore your grief, art therapy can give you a temporary escape. It can help you relax and find positive thoughts. This way, you can live in the moment instead of being overwhelmed by your grief.

It Boosts Your Overall Wellbeing

Most importantly, art can bring you joy during a difficult time of loss. It’s been found to reduce symptoms of depression, lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and pain, and build self-esteem — all of which are needed when coping with the loss of a loved one.

Limb lengthening surgery is a highly advanced orthopedic procedure designed to increase a person’s height safely and gradually. Over the last decade, it has become increasingly popular among individuals who wish to improve their physical proportions, boost confidence, or overcome height-related insecurities. Thanks to modern medical technology, the surgery is now much safer, more predictable, and more comfortable than it was in the past, allowing patients from all around the world to undergo treatment with confidence.

The procedure works by taking advantage of the body’s natural ability to regenerate bone. During surgery, the bone is carefully divided, and an internal or external device is placed to slowly separate the two segments. As the gap expands millimeter by millimeter each day, the body produces new bone tissue to fill the space. This controlled process, called distraction osteogenesis, allows patients to gain between 5 and 8 centimeters with femur lengthening alone, and in some cases, additional height can be achieved through tibia lengthening.

There are several techniques used in limb lengthening, such as the LON method, Precice internal nail, and external fixator-based systems. Each method has its advantages depending on the patient’s goals, budget, lifestyle, and medical condition. Internal methods like Precice offer high comfort, a lower infection risk, and discreet daily lengthening, while combined methods like LON offer a more affordable option with reliable results. Regardless of the method, all techniques require careful planning and close follow-up with an experienced medical team.

Limb lengthening is performed under general anesthesia and typically involves a hospital stay of several days. After surgery, the lengthening phase begins, during which the patient gradually adjusts the device to increase the bone length each day. This phase usually lasts 60 to 90 days, depending on the amount of length desired. Physiotherapy also plays a critical role, helping maintain joint mobility, muscle strength, and overall comfort throughout the process.

Recovery does not end with the completion of lengthening. The consolidation phase, when the new bone becomes stronger and hardens, takes several additional months. Most patients can walk without assistance around the fourth month and return to regular daily activities within six to eight months. Full recovery, including return to high-impact sports, typically requires up to a year.

Although limb lengthening surgery is effective, it is important for patients to have realistic expectations. The process requires discipline, patience, and consistent medical follow-up. When performed by an expert team and supported with proper physical therapy, the results can be life-changing. Many patients report improved self-confidence, better posture, enhanced proportions, and greater satisfaction with their overall appearance.

Today, limb lengthening surgery is not just a medical procedure but a transformative journey. With the right guidance and preparation, patients can safely achieve their height goals and enjoy the long-lasting benefits of this remarkable technology.
