Carmen Elisa James

Carmen Elisa James, 83, of Jersey City, New Jersey, passed away on July 11, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of love, sacrifice, strength, and devotion to her family.

Carmen was born on June 30, 1943, in Bogotá, Colombia, to the late Gaspar Garay and Carmen Aya. She was born and raised in Bogotá, a place that remained forever close to her heart and where many members of her beloved family still reside.

In 1970, Carmen courageously began a new chapter in her life when she moved to the United States. She first made her home in Jackson Heights, New York. After marrying the love of her life, Ralph James, in 1978, she moved to Jersey City, where they built their life together and where she would remain for the rest of her years.

One of Carmen’s proudest accomplishments was becoming a United States citizen. She understood the meaning of opportunity, perseverance, and building a better future, and she carried tremendous pride in the life she created through her courage and determination.

For many years, Carmen built a successful career as a customs import clerk, earning the respect of colleagues through her dedication, professionalism, and strong work ethic. She concluded her career with SJ Stiles before retiring. Dependable, diligent, and conscientious, Carmen approached her work with the same quiet strength, integrity, and sense of responsibility that defined every aspect of her life. While she took great pride in her professional accomplishments, nothing brought her greater joy, fulfillment, or purpose than the love of her family

After retiring, Carmen devoted herself to helping raise her granddaughters, Adrianna, Alexis, and Gia. Being their grandmother was not simply a role she cherished, it was one of the greatest joys and purposes of her life. She gave them her time, her wisdom, her protection, and the kind of unconditional love that will remain with them forever. Through the countless ordinary moments they shared, she created extraordinary memories that will continue to guide and comfort them throughout their lives.

Carmen was sweet and gentle, yet remarkably strong. She possessed a quiet strength that did not need recognition or praise. She was selfless by nature and consistently placed the needs of others before her own. She never needed grand possessions or elaborate things to feel fulfilled. Carmen was content with what she had because, to her, the greatest measure of a life was not what one owned, but how deeply one loved and how well one cared for others.

Her family was the center of her world. She expressed her love through everything she did, whether she was caring for those around her, preparing a meal, offering support, or simply being present when someone needed her. She was an excellent cook and a wonderful baker, filling her home with comforting aromas, delicious food, and the warmth that could only come from something prepared with love. She also enjoyed relaxing and watching her favorite novelas, one of life’s simple pleasures that brought her much enjoyment.

Carmen’s goodness was found in the details of everyday life. It was present in the meals she prepared, the sacrifices she made without complaint, the grandchildren she helped raise, and the many ways she quietly made life easier and more beautiful for the people she loved. Her strength was never harsh, and her gentleness was never weakness. She carried both with grace.

She will be remembered as a devoted wife, a loving mother, an adoring grandmother, and a loyal friend. Her family will remember her warm and gentle spirit, her humility, her resilience, and the limitless love she gave without ever asking for anything in return.

Carmen is survived by her beloved husband, Ralph James; her loving daughter, Jessica LaRosa, and her husband, Erminio; and her cherished granddaughters, Adrianna, Alexis, and Gia. She is also survived by her loving friends and her beloved extended family in Colombia, all of whom will deeply mourn her passing and forever treasure her memory.

She was predeceased by her parents, Gaspar Garay and Carmen Aya.

Although Carmen’s physical presence will be profoundly missed, the love she gave will never leave those who were blessed to receive it. It will live on in her family, in the traditions she created, in the lessons she taught, and in every memory of her gentle voice, generous heart, and unwavering devotion.

Carmen lived simply, loved deeply, and gave selflessly. Her life was a beautiful reminder that the greatest legacy a person can leave is the love placed into the hearts of others.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Church in Jersey City.

Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, New Jersey.
