Nazario "Joe" Valdez
<p>Nazario “Joe” Valdez, Sr. age 76, died, July 11, 2026, in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born on September 10, 1949, in Brady, Texas. The son of Juan and Barbara (Morales) Valdez.</p><p><br></p><p>Joe grew up in Menard, Texas, where he spent his childhood before moving to Ulysses, Kansas, in 1968. He married Mary Garcia, October 17, 1969, in Ulysses, Kansas. Joe worked for Ulysses Irrigation Pipe for 30 plus years, Inner Motion and for Ed Vanderpool at a mechanic shop, before retiring from Smyth Oil & Gas. Outside of work, Joe found great enjoyment in the outdoors. He was a deer hunter and enjoyed spending time target shooting and bow hunting. He also had a passion for collecting coins and driving and working on his Camaro. Since retirement he enjoyed taking care of his grand dogs, Misha, Charlie and Winston.</p><p><br></p><p>Joe is survived by his daughter, Alicia Johnson and husband, Bill of Johnson, Kansas; brothers, Walter Valdez and Jessie Valdez, Sr.; sister, Gloria Carrillo; as well as Mary’s family and many nieces and nephews.</p><p><br></p><p>Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; son, Nazario Valdez, Jr.; and his parents.</p><p><br></p><p>Graveside service will be Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas with Pastor Steve Swann, Jr officiating. Memorials may be given to Furever Friends in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
