Basil Coxen

<p><p>Basil Coxen from Prineville, Oregon, passed June 24th, 2026, at the age of 92. Basil was born in Westwood California, to Dee and Hermia Coxen. One of 12 children. When he was 8 the family moved to Toledo, Oregon where he attended school and met his high school sweetheart, Barbara Grant. After serving in the United States Army, Basil married Barbara on June 25th, 1955, and together they shared 65 years of marriage before Barbara passed in 2020. In 2024 Basil married Betty Forslund who brought him great companionship in his later years. Basil and Barbara began raising their family in Mulino, Oregon, before moving to Salem, then Rickreall and eventually settling in Prineville. He worked for the Department of Revenue in Clackamas County as a property appraiser for five years then served as deputy chief assessor for Marion County, retiring in 1994. He was fondly remembered by colleagues for his knowledge, quick wit, optimism and generous spirit.<br> He is survived by his wife, Betty, his brother Boyd Coxen, his 4 children, Steve, Ken and Matt Coxen and Brenda Chapman, nine grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.<br> An avid outdoorsman, Basil loved his annual hunting trips with his sons, grandsons and close friends. “What happens in elk camp, stays in elk camp.” was the motto, though the stories always seemed to get bigger by the telling. He also enjoyed golf and growing a garden with giant pumpkins that became the envy of friends and neighbors.<br> In his final days, he spoke of his pride in his family and gratitude for their time together. He said he had a good life; had done everything he wanted to do and was ready to go.
