Robert G. Mennona

Brigadier General Robert “Bob” Mennona, 79, of City Island NY, passed away on August 15,2026. He was born in Fordham in the Bronx April 30,1947. His parents Veronica and Robert(deceased), moved to City Island in 1948 where he grew up with his brother James and sister, Nancy Ann Peters (predeceased). He held a Bachelor of Science Degree in CriminalJustice from the NY Institute Technology College, a Masters from Columbia University, and USArmy War College. He joined the NYPD Trainee Program in 1965 and worked as a radio cardispatcher in what was then the 46th Pct. on Ryer Avenue.Bob married Terry Libbey of City Island in 1967, and had three children. After Terry’s passing in1978, he married Carol Persico in 1981, and with the addition of her two boys the “Brady Bunch”was formed.In 1966 General Mennona gave up an occupational deferment to get drafted into the Army as aprivate assigned to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and then Fort McClellen, Alabama. He attendedthe Infantry Officer Candidate School in Ft. Benning, Georgia and upon graduation in August1967, was assigned to the Military Police Corp. After joining the reserves in 1969, he servedwith the 800th Military Police Group, where he was Commander, Headquarters Company andAssistant Operations Officer. He served in various command and staff positions with the 800thMP Group and 310th Military Police Battalion and as Commander of the 340th Military PoliceBattalion. On March 23, 1996 he was promoted to Brigadier General with the Army ,Commander of the 800th Military Brigade. General Mennona has been decorated with theMeritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters,the Army Achievement Medal, the ArmyReserve Components Achievement Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, the National DefenseService Medal with Bronze Star Device, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with hourglassdevice, and the Army Service Ribbon. In 1997 he was inducted into the Infantry School Hall ofFame. He proudly served his country worldwide, with assignments in Germany, Kuwait, SaudiArabia, Qutar, Panama, Costa Rica, Washington D.C., the Pentagon, and the 3rd ArmyHeadquarters at Ft. McPhearson, Atlanta Georgia. During his time as General, his DeputyCommander was none other than Larry Lane, a hard charging infantry officer turned MP, a greatsoldier and his best friend. General Mennona retired from military service on April 30, 2007.Bob was an American Legion Member for 46 years. He held the men and women of thisinstitution in great regard. He has held many positions with the Legion over the years, fromCommander, Memorial Day Parade coordinator (at Vic Anderson's request), to his most recentpositions as Treasurer, Bar Chairman and Service Officer. He was currently employed by Ameriprise Financial Rienas & Brown Wealth Management.General Bob Mennona is survived by his wife Carol, his Daughters Christine Pecoraro (husbandRaymond deceased), Patricia Schudde and husband Ron, his sons Richard Verdi and wifeCathy, Michael Verdi and wife Francesca, and Bob Mennona and wife Charlotte, Nephew JohnPeters, his wife Liz, and son Nolan, and his mother Patty. His many grandchildren; Jessica andJulianna Tretin, Matthew Schudde, Sabrina and Marissa Verdi, Brianna and Sara Verdi, andCianna and Veronica Mennona. His brother James Mennona and his wife Maureen, theirchildren Matthew and wife Karyn , Peter and wife Aldona and James and Sarah and manynieces and nephews.A service will be held on September 19th at St. Marys Star of the Sea on City Island at 11 am.In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Leonard H Hawkins Post 156 of City IslandServicemen's Fund.
