Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James J. Halpin, who left us peacefully on October 3, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born in Camden, New Jersey, on June 3, 1945. After graduating from King’s College, he began his teaching career in the Abington School District, where he would make a lasting impact on generations of students. It was also during these early years that Jim discovered one of his greatest passions in life—coaching. Jim met the love of his life, Judy, on New Year’s Eve in 1965. They shared 55 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered around family, love, and an appreciation for all that life had to offer.
While teaching in the Abington School District, Jim coached soccer and basketball until his own daughters were old enough to begin their sports careers. From that point on, his daughters' teams became his teams, too. Jim was a devoted and loving husband and father who took tremendous pride in supporting his girls in every passion and pursuit, especially when sports were involved. He helped coach their softball, soccer, and basketball teams, with basketball holding a special place in his heart.
His coaching journey began with the Saint Anastasia Church CYO Small Fry basketball program and continued through high school with the Comets. Anyone who played for Jim will fondly remember starting practice with jump ropes—and knowing that a hat or hood was required when heading outside at the end of practice!
When Jim wasn't coaching one of his daughters' teams, he could almost always be found cheering loudly for one of his beloved Philadelphia sports teams. He was a lifelong Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, and Sixers fan, although, truth be told, Jim simply loved watching a great game. His enthusiasm for sports was contagious, and he never needed much encouragement to share his thoughts from the sidelines.
Jim's love of sports continued with the arrival of his twelve grandchildren. He attended as many of their games, recitals, and performances as Judy would allow, proudly supporting each of them. And, in true Jim fashion, he was thrilled to once again earn the title of Coach, helping with many of his grandchildren's teams. Above all else, Jim will be remembered for his generous heart, his unwavering love for his family, and the encouragement and support he gave so freely to those around him. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, a dedicated teacher, and a coach who touched countless lives. His presence on the sidelines, his unmistakable voice cheering from the stands, and his constant support will be deeply missed.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; his three daughters, Julie (Mark), Tricia (Reggie), and Kelly (Jason); his brothers, Tom (Gloria) and Michael; and his twelve cherished grandchildren: Joey, CC, Colin, and Fiona Diamond; Reece, Jaden, and Olivia Craft; and Riley, Braeden, Jackson, Raegan, and Gracyn Fisher. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Stephen and Billy.
